I readily concede I chucked aside my free-market principles when I was told ... the situation we were facing could be worse than the Great Depression -- George W. Bush
Here is the entire problem with Bush's oxymoron 'compassionate conservatism' — either you are conservative and follow your principles or you are compassionate and chuck your principles aside at the smallest excuse. The Democrats have the monopoly on compassion — they will bailout all the failures at the expense of the successful. The conservative position would be to require those who have made bad decisions and investments to fail. To paraphrase Confucius' reply to Lao Tzu — If you indemnify those who have failed, then how do you reward the successful?
